Rather think it out loud together?

Talk It Through

A Parent Strategy Session for when a meeting is coming up, a big decision is on the table, or you're not sure what to ask for yet.

After you book, a short intake form comes to your email so I can prepare. We spend 60 minutes together, over Zoom from anywhere, or in person if you're in the Birmingham area. We sort out what matters most and what to ask, and within three to five business days you get a written summary of your next steps.

Questions Parents Ask

What does a special education advocate do?
I help parents understand their child's IEP, 504 plan, and evaluations, and decide what to ask for. I walk you through what the paperwork means and help you get ready for conversations with your school team. My work happens before and between meetings. I don’t typically attend IEP meetings, but if your situation calls for it, we can talk about it.

Do you only work with Birmingham families?
No. Many of my families are in Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, and the other Birmingham suburbs, and I meet with them in person or over Zoom. I also work with families in all 50 states over Zoom. When something is state-specific, I'll say so and point you to your state's rules.

What should I send for a review?
Your child's IEP or 504 plan, as one document up to 25 pages. If you have evaluations or progress reports you'd like me to see too, mention them on your intake form and we'll decide together.

Do you give legal advice?
No. I'm not an attorney. I help you understand your options and make thoughtful requests, and if your situation needs an attorney, I'll tell you.

Which one should I start with?
If you have a plan and want an opinion on it, start with A Second Set of Eyes. If you have questions but aren't sure what they are yet, start with Talk It Through.

I GET IT. I'VE BEEN THERE. I CAN HELP.
